How do i tell a fake Coach purse from the real thing?

  • Posted on April 7, 2009 at 3:49 pm

For all you girls(and guys) that know your stuff!! My friend bought a “coach” purse she claims was 40 dollars! Yes we know it is fake. But it looks just like my real Coach for 230 dollars. I am not good enough to tell them apart- I dont have enough knowledge about the real thing. Please tell me the tell-tale signs of a fake Coach so i can tell them apart…thanks.

If you aren’t buying it a a Coach store or a major retailer, chances are it’s fake. If it’s a “good deal”, chances are it’s fake.

Usually coach purses have a leather emblem inside the bag that says “This is a Coach bag…” next to the inside pocket. If you go to a coach store and look at a genuine coach bag you will see what I mean.

The outside might be identical.. But.. You have to look on the inside.. Coach will have a tag on the inside and the fakes won’t. Plus.. They look better on the inside where the fakes look raggedy.

You wouldn’t think anyone would bother to make fake COACH bags because the originals are so (relatively) cheap to begin with. But as you know, people will do anything to make a quick buck. Fake COACH bags are a little difficult to spot, but here are some tips based on my personal experiences and observations (I am not affiliated with Coach – I just love their products and **** to see people getting taken advantage of):

    1. The “C” pattern will be off – except for some patterns, like the “optic” or my new favorite “scarf print,” the tip of the “C” facing the other “C” should touch. In other words, the notch at the top of the capital letter “C” should touch the notch of the backwards-facing “C” – so that it looks like a broken infinity sign. Also, the C’s should start in the center and go out. The seams should go straight through the middle of the C, and the pattern should be aligned horizontally and vertically. The best way to tell is to go to and look at the real thing, and then compare it to what you’re looking at on eBay and see if the pattern is different.

    2. Sometimes the “CC” will actually be a “GG” – how much more obvious can you get! And no, this does not mean it’s a Gucci! (I’m not as familiar with Gucci products, but obviously if someone is selling you a “COACH” bag which is imprinted with the letter “G” then it’s logically fake.)

    3. The stitching is sloppy or the pattern is crooked – this is a sure sign because COACH does not make sloppy products!

    4. The bag does not look like any other bag you’ve ever seen – if it looks “sort of” like a bag you’ve seen but not quite, it may be fake. (See #12 below).

    5. Beware of blurry photos and stock photos (a stock photo is one that has been cut-and-pasted from the COACH website) – this does not necessarily mean the bag is fake but if you see either of these types of photos, I would contact the seller and see if they can send you a photo of the actual item they’re selling so you can analyze it for yourself.

    6. Ask the seller to verify that they are offering an original product. If they fail to respond to your request, this may be a sign that they don’t want to incriminate themselves. (And unfortunately, just because the seller claims it’s authentic does not necessarily mean that it is).

    7. Most COACH purses have a serial number stamped on the inside, on a square patch of leather sewn into the lining, usually on the front of an inside pocket. Some of the smaller purses (the “clutch” or the “mini”) do not have this serial number. However, handbags and totes should all have the serial number patch. The serial number typically consists of a series of numbers or a number-and-letter combination. The best way to check is to look at a real COACH purse and then compare it to the one on eBay. Beware, some fake COACH bags also have a serial number – so you’ll have to look at other aspects of the bag and the seller to determine if it’s fake.

    8. Real COACH purses have the “COACH” logo stamped on most of the metal fixtures – some of the older “classic” styles do not have the stamp, but most of the newer styles do. Just something to watch for… again, compare the one in the photo to one you see at a department store or on the COACH website.

    9. Speaking of zippers, I just received an email from another eBay member advising that the “YKK” zippers are the highest-quality zippers (and therefore if the bag has a zipper which is not stamped with YKK but instead is stamped with something else or nothing at all, the bag is most likely a fake). I pulled out all my COACH purses and found that the piece of the zipper that actually pulls the two halves of the zipper together is embossed with a tiny “YKK.” So that is something to look for – which will be impossible to tell from photos so you’ll need to ask the seller. I also noted that all my COACH purses have the zipper “pull” made by COACH – it is not just a piece of metal, like you see on a zipper from, say, a pair of jeans. The zipper “pull” is made from either a hoop with a stiched-leather pull or a series of smaller hoops with a larger one at the end. Another stunning example of COACH quality and individuality!

    10. Look at the lining – if the bag has a satin lining then it should have COACH in the pattern of the fabric of that lining. I do own some bags with no lining at all (the old-style bags) and I also own bags with a canvas lining that does not have any pattern on it. This is another case where you want to try and compare the real thing to the item being offered for sale on eBay.

    11. I’ve been asked this question often – if it says “Made in China” does that mean it’s fake? The answer is no – I’ve seen real COACH bags with a “Made in China” patch or tag on the inside. Not all COACH bags are made there, but some are. Some say this is a sign of decreasing quality, but in my opinion, it seems that COACH quality has increased throughout the years. I’ve owned COACH bags since the early 80′s, and I love them all!

    12. Admitted replicas: A member of eBay just alerted me to a website where they sell COACH replicas – where they ADMIT they are not authentic! This is a good website to visit so that you can see what a fake one looks like. I’m not sure that anyone from this company would sell their bags on eBay, but you just never know. Just something else to watch for… check it out for yourself and you can be the judge … likebags.com.

The biggest sign for me is that real coach bags have full-on leather tags on the inside, usually near the inside pocket, with a serial number on it. I’ve never seen a fake bag with that, although I guess it’s possible.

Put the two together. You have a golden opportunity to see the real difference in the two.

Usually, fakes have worse hardware, worse stitching (sloppy or irregular), cheap/unpleasant material, bad printing or patterns on fabric, and a fake label. The differences can be subtle to extremely obvious.

Examine the two closely (differences in fakes depend on the manufacturer.) You’ll be primed to spot a fake after you know what to look for.

my mother tried to trick me the other day by giving me a fake.

i could tell becuase the stitching in some places was broken off or their were stray strings hanging. almost all coach purses have that thick stiching/hemming if you know what I’m talking about, but it always looks very clean and almost never breaks. also, the pattern in the fabric are like tiny little ovals, and the fake’s ovals seemed a little off in size and shape….and another thing i noticed was that it was a shade darker brown. i think they skimp on the bottoms of the purse too, there is usually extra leather/buttons on the bottom of coach purses to protect it from wear and tear.

  14. Hair Goddess says:

From my own personal observation, this is what I have noticed. The leather on the fake ones, such as the handle, is not as thick. The material looks like pleather and is thinner. Also, the stitching is usually closer stitch per stitch on a genuine, not loose and gappy. I think Coach also uses thicker, more durable thread. My friend bought a fake one off Ebay (not knowing) she went to the Coach store to have it confirmed and they could not even tell. They knew when they put the registration #’s in the computer and the digits didn’t match the purse style. All in all, it looks good far away, but hers will be falling apart in 3 months if its’ a fake.

Twiztid had he best answer hands down, but I will say that it is possible to get an authentic one very cheaply. At Marshalls, or TJ Maxx they sometimes get bags and if they don’t sell quickly enough they will go on clearance, and I was able to buy a small $200 bag there for about $40 (on super clearance). It kinda just depends on where she bought it, but you should take a trip down to the Coach store to actually compare the bag she has. If she did not get it from a high-end department store, directly from Coach, or even at a place like Marshalls, its definitely fake.
